[Digiview #11] An interview with Illuminated Paths

Illuminated paths is a well-known label in the underground scene ever since its arrival in 2014, they have released over 800 different albums ever since then. I had the pleasure to interview josh and ask him some very intriguing questions.

-Which year was it when you first started your label?

I took over IP on January 1st of 2014 when Wes Ables (aka Public Spreads the News) had decided to instead follow a burgeoning shoe empire idea. He had created and launched the label on Bandcamp around the MIDDLE of 2012, the label was intended to release artists he enjoyed digitally and some of his solo stuff. So I took over and started doing releases from IP-020 with the resurgent cassette culture in mind.

-Are there any records on illuminated paths you would suggest to our readers?

We at IP only release that which we see the potential in and never release anything we don’t already thoroughly enjoy. Take a chance, roll the dice, spin the wheel. It is guaranteed to be a journey of epic and pleasing proportions.

-What's the meaning behind your label name?

Illuminating the path to radical and total earhole bliss.

-In three words how would you describe your music to a first-time listener?

Retro-Ephemeratic Future Classic

-What type of equipment is used to dub your cassettes or other physical media?

All vintage equipment was utilized, cassette decks individually daisy-chained to dub cassettes and hand-manipulated new sound creations.

-Any plans you would like to share for illuminated paths in 2022?

VAPE8 vaporwave hip-hop collab with trading cards, NOOB SAIBOT 15 years in the making vaporwave hip-hop uber-comp with over 75 above ground and below artists recorded utilizing all mediums and styles, Ch.SRFR_X series collab with electronic/experimental artists from all over the world. Black Wick production albums created by vintage cassette to cassette and VHS/vinyl to cassette layering and manipulation only, and Illuminated Paths & Broken Machine Films presents…  LIVE Showcases coming soon to a town near you!

-I know you host live shows for artists in Florida, how's the experience at these live events?

I enjoy doing larger-than-life projections during artists' performances with only the latest and greatest in vintage analog VHS manipulation gear, from the fine fine folks at Tachyons+. Logan has created machines such as the 3 I use (Fun 21, Vortex Decoder Switcher, and Psychenizer) for artists such as Aphex Twin, Daft Punk, Trent Reznor, etc etc, and has even created music vids for such amazing and influential artists as Gary Numan.

-Do you have any artists that you take inspiration from?

The Residents, Negativland, Chrome, TV Carnage, EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE!, Wonder Showzen, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Beck, Anticon Records, Andy Warhol field recordings, R. Stevie Moore, David Bowie, Marley Marl, DJ Shadow, Scott Herren,

-When you were growing up which type of music did you listen to?

Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Cher, Vangelis, Weird Al Yankovic, and Queensryche. My parents had a pile of vinyl that I thoroughly enjoyed pitching down to 331/3 and pushing my ear hard against the half-blown speakers at full volume.

-Can you tell us about your project broken machine films?

Broken Machine Films is a production company founded in 2002 by Joshua Rogers, Dylan Marchetti, and Carl Ayala in Brooklyn New York. I had just finished up my degree from Full Sail in Orlando for Film/Video production and was ready to take on the world. Landed in New York with both feet. Unfortunately, New York had other plans for me, ended up working on a few major motion pictures and meeting quite a few industry professionals while I was there, but found it not my cup of tea in the end. Moved back to the Space Coast of Florida and started working for NASA doing video work and continued with Broken Machine Films creating music videos and filming live performances for artists both local and abroad. Dylan went on to run several acclaimed production companies and Carl moved to New Zealand to work for Peter Jackson. Claim to early Broken Machine Films fame… did a video for Jimmy Tamborello’s solo stuff (DNTEL) just before The Postal Service broke. Our video for (This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan…

Broken Machine Films is indeed still in full effect doing music videos/filming live shows and utilizing only the latest in vintage analog video gear and manipulation equipment (Tachyons+) to do live interactive visuals for artists during their performances.

I also use the moniker Broken Machine Films presents… sometimes for my strictly more sample-based audio creations.

-One final question I like to ask everyone I interview If you were stranded on an island which 3 music-related items would you take with you?

Acoustic guitar, pics, strings.
